The vast majority of storage containers come in one of two sizes: 8' wide, 8'6" high, and 20' or 40' long. One reason storage containers are so familiar and inexpensive is this standardization: in many ways, any one container is interchangeable for another.
Other sizes are available: you can find high-clearance containers for storing taller items, as well as lengths ranging from 6' to 50' or more. Unless you have a very specific need, though, you'll find it easier to go with one of the standard sizes.
Storage containers are built from corrugated steel, usually 12- or 14-gauge for strength, with interior floors of plywood. They're built weather- and fire-proof to help protect their contents.
