Storage containers are the quickest and cheapest solution to a space crunch. However they're only good for storage: you can't use them for office space, classrooms, or anything else besides basic storage of supplies, inventory, or equipment.
The vast majority of storage containers come in one of two sizes: 8' wide, 8'6" high, and 20' or 40' long. One reason storage containers are so familiar and inexpensive is this standardization: in many ways, any one container is interchangeable for another.
Other sizes are available: you can find high-clearance containers for storing taller items, as well as lengths ranging from 6' to 50' or more. Unless you have a very specific need, though, you'll find it easier to go with one of the standard sizes.
Storage container features
At one level, a storage container is just a big metal box: not the most intricate purchase you could make for your business. Depending on what you need it for, though, there are some extras that may be worthwhile:
- Extra doors make it easy to access the stuff in the middle or at the far end.
- Security bars and cam rods can help make sure that everything you put in the container stays in the container. (You'll have to buy your own locks, though.)
- Adjustable shelving helps organize the contents and makes more efficient use of space.
- Ramps make loading and unloading easier, if you use hand trucks or other wheeled carts.
- Ventilation systems – usually simple louvers and wind turbines – reduce humidity and odors.
- HVAC or refrigeration units give you the greatest control over the temperature inside your storage container, if you intend to store perishables or other items that need to be protected from temperature extremes.
Custom paint – if the container is going to be in plain sight for six months or a year, you might want to consider paying a little extra for a custom paint job to improve its overall appearance.
