Sizing and choosing an office trailer
Office trailers are available in a range of standard sizes.
- The 12' x 60' "singlewide" is the most common
- Putting two singlewide trailers together and removing the middle wall creates the 24' x 60' doublewide.
- Popular smaller sizes include 8' x 24', 10' x 30', and 10' x 42'.
When comparing trailers, make sure you've got the internal measurements of the "box" – the size of the office space, not including the hitch or other external dimensions.
The outside dimensions are important when considering where you're going to put the trailer. Look for overhead obstacles, narrow access points, or very uneven terrain that would make delivery difficult or even impossible and you can avoid some serious headaches, as well as unforeseen expenses.
Since the basic furniture is built right in, it should be pretty easy to judge how many people can work in a certain size trailer. The office trailer dealer should be able to offer some guidelines, as well. Keep in mind that the longer you'll be using the trailer, the more the space issue matters: employees are generally more tolerant of cramped conditions if they know it's only a temporary situation.
Choosing a portable office trailer
Because office trailers are usually rented, you'll probably want to inspect the trailer before you commit to a purchase. Visit the dealership and inspect the trailer carefully. Look for evidence of water leaks – stains on the carpet or walls; moisture trapped in the windows – as that can be a real problem. Evidence of mold or mildew – sights or smells – is another danger sign.
Be sure to check whether the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to your situation: if your portable office trailer is used for public business, it probably does. That means you'll need an entry ramp, as well as handicapped-accessible bathrooms.
